KOCHI: A Chennai-based telemedicine service provider, Space Hospitals, will be spreading its network in the State with an array of tie-ups with major super-specialty hospitals and small hospitals to reach out to the people in remote areas. Such a network will help a person access any specialty treatment anywhere in the country where this network is available, said E. Padmanabhan, chief operating officer of the hospital, addressing a press meet here recently. This would be beneficial to those who have to travel a long distance to reach a super-specialty hospital. As such, emergency cases such as snakebites, pesticide poisoning, trauma care or cardiac care could be immediately referred to specialists at the switch of a button at the nearby hospital, he said. The connectivity would be established through VSAT and optical fibre cable network. The cost of the service would vary according to the discipline of medicine up to a maximum of Rs.250 for a consultation. And the consultation did not have a time limit, he added. "The line will be available for as long as the patient requires it," he added. "Space Hospitals has tied up with the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, which already has a telemedicine facility. We will be opening more than 20 satellite medical centres and telemedicine clinics in Kerala in the next 12 months," Mr. Padmanabhan said. The company is planning to widen its service to remote areas by connecting more hospitals and satellite medical centres (SMEs) throughout the country, he added. Space Hospitals provides services to 14 major super-specialty hospitals and 50 SMEs across the country and four regional associate hospitals in South India. The company also aims to enter the East Asian and West Asian countries besides Africa.
