Special Correspondent
KOZHIKODE: The Department of Microbiology at Kozhikode Medical College has acquired two automated culture systems. One of these systems, BacT Alert, offers several facilities. Automated methods for blood culture makes it possible to sense the presence of bacterial growth in two to four hours and to give preliminary report of blood culture so that proper antibiotics can be started promptly.
Pathogens
It would also make it possible to grow pathogens from blood even after antibiotics are started. Early processing and reporting help in reducing the morbidity and mortality. The other system (automated culture of mycobacteria or MB Bact) makes possible tubercle bacilli isolation within 14 days. By conventional methods it would take six to eight weeks. This is the first MB Bact system in the State. At present, TB patients are making use of this facility through private laboratories outside the State paying a high fee. Now, this investigation could be done at a reasonable rate at Kozhikode Medical College.
