KOZHIKODE: Industries Minister Elamaram Karim has said that steps will be taken to entrust Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) with the selection of candidates to all the vacant posts in public sector units (PSUs) in the State. Mr. Karim was inaugurating a symposium on, ``Public Service Commission and Kerala society'' organised by the PSC in connection with its Golden Jubilee celebrations here on Saturday. The Minister said the PSC was a constitutional body that did not face erosion in its values. It ensured to uphold merit and social justice through its selection process. Civil services which is being filled up through PSC should have been showing efficiency. However, its efficiency has not materialised so far. The evils of society get reflected in the civil services also. The Narendra Commission report had found that reservation was being sabotaged. But only legislation would not ensure social justice. A consensus was needed for this, he said. The Minister suggested that in future the PSC should have a system to take track of the candidates appointed by it, so that his\her retirement date was known to it. In such a situation, the commission could ask the respective department heads as to why they failed to report the vacancy even after the person's retirement. He said the PSC should increase the speed of its selection process further. Then it could reduce the number of complaints now being levelled against it. PSC chairman K.V. Salahuddin presided. He said the demand from all quarters to entrust selection of all posts with the PSC was itself proof of its credibility. Aryadan Mohammed, MLA; E.T. Mohammed Basheer, former Minister; R.S. Panicker, N. Ananthakrishnan and V.P. Abdul Hameed, all PSC members, and T.N. Jayachandran, former Additional Chief Secretary were among those who spoke on the occasion.
