Shinde lays foundation for dam in Imphal
Iboyaima Laithangbam
IMPHAL:
Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde laid the foundation stone for the multi-crore Loktak Downstream Project and the Tipaimukh dam in Tamenglong and Churachandpur districts respectively on Saturday.
He was accompained by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, Heavy Industries Minister Santosh Mohon Dev, Union Minister of State, PMO, Prithiviraj Chauhan and Labour and Employment Minister Oscar Fernades.
The Ministers later addressed a public meeting at Parbung in Churachandpur district, where people have been demanding the speedy construction of the dam.
There would be no shortage of power in Manipur since 10 per cent of the 1500 MW to be generated from the dam would be given free of cost.
Anti-dam organisations had called for a 24-hour general strike in Manipur. Except for areas dominated by Naga tribals and non-tribal Manipuris normal life was not disrupted.
In the heart of Imphal women vendors plied their daily trade.
Attendance in government offices was normal.
