Senior citizens stage `rail roko'

BIJAPUR: Members of Senior Citizens' Club of Bijapur and Bijapur Broadgauge Horata Samiti on Saturday staged "rail roko" demanding train stopover at Ibrahimpur, an extension here.

The protesters, who gathered at Ibrahimpur, stopped Yashwanthpur-Bagalkot Basava Express, and demanded a brief stopover for express and local trains because it would benefit thousands of people residing in southern part of Bijapur city.

They said Ibrahimpur was a regular station till recently when narrow gauge service existed.

After it was converted into broad gauge no trains were stopped causing inconvenient to commuters especially those regularly travel between Bijapur and Bagalkot.

If stopover was sanctioned at Ibrahimpur, they said, residents of Viveknagar West, Viveknagar East, Kaka Kharkanis Nagar, Kanakadasa Badavane, Janalanagar, Raghavendra Colony, Basavanagar, Managuli Agasi, Ibrahimpur, Vajrahanuman Nagar, Venkatesh Nagar,

Keerthi Nagar, Ramanagar, Managuli Agasi, and many other localities would save lot of money and time. They demanded introduction of more trains from Bijapur and Bagalkot.

The protesters handed over a memorandum, addressed to Railway Minister, to Station Master Srinivas Murthy on the occasion. Club president M.K. Khadi, vice-president S.S. Hirlakonda and secretary S.B. Kolkar, and samiti president Vishwanth Bhavi. Office-bearers of the samiti Mallamma Yalwar and Chandrakant Bijjaragi participated in the agitation.

Stoppage

Meanwhile, Department of Railway has sanctioned one-minute stopover at Telgi (Basavanabagewadi) and Alamatti stations for express trains from Saturday.

Following this, the Basava Express on Saturday made a brief halt at both stations falling between Bijapur and Bagalkot.
