VIJAYAWADA: At least 300 huts were destroyed in a major fire at VAMBAY Colony in Singh Nagar on Saturday. There was no loss of life. Fire broke out in one of the huts in the colony of those who were moved out from Radhanagar a year ago. It spread to engulf all other huts. The dwellers were put up in the open space near VAMBAY Colony with the assurance of constructing pucca houses for them. The fire erupted around 3 p.m. apparently following explosion of a cooking gas cylinder. It had a cascading effect, resulting in the explosion of another six cylinders. Eyewitnesses said that the fire took no time to spread to all other houses because of strong wind. The winds blew so strong that about 90 houses of those who were moved out from Padmavati Ghat and put up there were also gutted. These houses are located far from those of Radhanagar dwellers but exist in continuity on one side. When the accident occurred, many of the dwellers were away from their huts as they went out for their daily wage work.
