Rogue elephant killed in Assam
Sushanta Talukdar
Guwahati:
Laden, the rogue wild Asiatic elephant, which has been creating havoc in northern Assam's Sonitpur district, was killed by elephant hunter Dwipen Ram Phukan in the Behali tea estate of the district on Saturday morning. The Assam Forest department had set December 31 deadline for killing the elephant.
The male non-tusker, which had killed at least 18 persons in Sonitpur district since 2004, died around 7.30 a.m. when the hunter opened fire after the pachyderm charged at him inside the tea estate. Mr. Phukan was hired by the Forest department to kill the elephant after it was declared rogue on July 3, 2006. Laden was buried at the estate after veterinarians performed post-mortem on it. The report was still awaited.
