Sonia Gandhi lauds veterans of 1971 war
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI:
Lauding the courage and valour of the Indian Armed Forces in the 1971 war with Pakistan, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday said the liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan was one of the "brightest passages" of Indian history.
In a message to the veterans of Operation Cactus Lily (the war of 1971), who had gathered at the All-India Congress Committee headquarters here for a special function on the occasion of the 35th Vijay Divas, Ms. Gandhi said Bangladesh's liberation marked India's commitment to the ideals of freedom from oppression and the right to democratic self-rule.
Ms. Gandhi added that the divas was also a reminder of the visionary leadership of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
