NEW DELHI: Advocating the need for codification of privileges of parliamentarians and legislators, a national seminar on Saturday urged lawmakers to take a fresh look at the issue. At an interactive session in the concluding part of the seminar, "Legislature and media: reflections on role and relationship," correspondents covering Parliament and State legislatures decided to make a recommendation on this line. Inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Friday, the seminar organised by the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training (BPST) and the Press Advisory Committee of the Lok Sabha was attended by 26 correspondents from 13 State legislatures. Lok Sabha Secretary-General P.D.T. Achary, who presided over the concluding session, outlined the privileges of members and jurisdiction of the powers of the Speaker. The recommendations included a regular orientation programme for correspondents covering State legislatures by the BPST on the lines for media covering the Lok Sabha and annual national seminar/interactive sessions.
Media advisory committees
It also suggested that State legislatures consider setting up media advisory committees for greater interaction on an institutional framework and study tours.
