"Turning away project will be a tragedy"

Agartala: Scuttling Tata Motors' investment plans in Singur would be nothing less than a tragedy for West Bengal as also the Northeast in development terms, Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh said here on Saturday.

Appeals to end fast

Appealing to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee to end her opposition to Tata's small car project, he said: "When Kolkata grows, the Northeast grows and if the small car project of the Tatas cannot come up at Singur it will be a tragedy for West Bengal as well as the Northeast."

"I met the Tata general manger at Kolkata airport yesterday who told me that ten States had offered to set up the project, but West Bengal was the most professional, transparent and business friendly," Mr. Ramesh, who is on a visit to Tripura, said. — PTI
