NEW DELHI: To enhance the revenue in the hands of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi "and do away with the nuisance of the parking mafia in the Capital", Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan has suggested that the Corporation, which earned Rs.60 crore from parking lots last year and several crores this year, should develop more authorised parking slots since the potential from this is Rs.200 crore. "This excess money is at present being pocketed by the parking mafia," he said. By doing so, Dr. Vardhan said, the MCD would also not have to unnecessarily burden the people with higher parking rates. He said it would do away with the proposed move to raise the parking rates in MCD areas from this coming January 1. The BJP leader also urged the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi to direct the MCD to withdraw the proposed increases in the parking rates. The Corporation has decided to increase the parking fees for all the vehicles. According to the new rates, Rs.10 would be charged for car parking for 10 hours and Rs.20 for 24 hours. The scooterists would have to pay Rs.7 for 10 hours' parking and Rs.15 for 24 hours. "While there are over 46 lakhs registered vehicles in Delhi that is spread over 1,432 square kilometres, the MCD has developed only 120 authorised parking slots,"he said and charged that over 200 parking lots were being operated illegally by the parking mafia in connivance with some corrupt MCD officials.
