THRISSUR: Holder SAI (Kollam) began its campaign in the 52nd State senior hockey championship on a flourishing note at the Engineering College ground here on Saturday. Drawn in Group A of the preliminary league, the SAI side trounced Kottayam 8-2 in the morning and then continued on with its good work to wallop Idukki 14-0 in the afternoon session. Runner-up Thiruvananthapuram, however, faced stiff challenge from Ernakulam before winning the Group B tie 2-1. The results: Preliminary league: Group A: SAI (Kollam) bt Kottayam 8-2; bt Idukki 14-0; Kottayam bt Idukki 2-0; Alappuzha bt Kottayam 2-0. Group B: Kollam bt Kozhikode 1-0; Kannur drew with Palakkad 0-0. Group C: Kasaragod drew with Wayanad 0-0; Thrissur bt Pathanamthitta 7-0. Group D: Thiruvananthapuram bt Ernakulam 2-1; Malappuram bt Ernakulam 1-0.
