Four held under NSA

ERODE: Four Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam volunteers were arrested under the National Security Act (NSA). Collector D. Karthikeyan said here on Saturday that some days ago seven persons entered the Sri Raghavendraswamy temple on Agrahara Street and damaged the Ramar idol. In this connection, V. Kumaragurubaran (41) and R. Muruganandham (26) of Erode, R. Elangovan (43) of Gobichettipalayam, and K. Arjunan (25) of Thingalure were arrested under the Act and sent to Coimbatore prison. - Staff Reporter

Review meeting

ERODE: All the roadworks sanctioned earlier and also the new works should be completed within the stipulated period. The busy roads should be given priority, said Highways Minister M.P. Woman kills children, ends life

THENI: Rekha, 23, of Gandhi Nagar in Chinnamanur killed here two children - Nagendran (4) and Kamatchi (2) - by administering poison and committed suicide by hanging herself in her house near here on Saturday. Her father has lodged dowry harassment case against the in law of his daughter. Meanwhile, people icketed Theni-Madurai Road demanding arrest of the accused allegedly involved in the case.

Police persuaded the agitators to lift the picketing and assured action in the matter.

Plea to BSNL

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Consumer Coordination Council (CCC) has demanded the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited to clear the disparity in charging rental for the same service in some area.

In a statement, P. Duraisingam, Chairman, CCC, said the practice of charging different rentals for the same service came under Unfair Trade Practice and Monopoly Trade Practice under the consumer protection Act 1986. Mr. Duraisingam said BSNL should look into the matter.

Man held for stealing jewels

THENI: Rajamani, 35, was arrested on the charges of burglary and robbery here on Saturday. The police seized 17 sovereigns of gold jewels from him.

Gold dealer robbed

ARIYALUR: A gold dealer from Villupuram was injured when unidentified persons attacked him using deadly weapons and robbed him of cash and jewellery on the outskirts of Ariyalur on Friday night. Two special police teams have been formed to trace the culprits.

Police said that the car in which Subash Chand (36) and his brother Ashok Kumar (38) were going to Perambalur was intercepted by the culprits under the guise of repairing their lorry.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 110.60 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Saturday. The inflow was 3,883 cusecs and the discharge 12,000 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

Three die in accident

VILLUPURAM: Three persons were killed when an ambulance van collided with an omni bus at Pidagam near here on Friday night. The deceased included the ambulance driver A.Thiagarajan (23), Sukumar (27) of Chinna Tirupati and R. John Wesley (21), a staff nurse of a private hospital at Salem.

The ambulance was returning to Salem after admitting a patient in a Puducherry hospital. The bus carried Ayyappa devotees. The bus driver was injured. — Special Correspondent

Minister suspends two hospital workers

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Minister for Health K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran ordered suspension of two workers of the government hospital here for a week, during a surprise inspection on Saturday. The action followed complaints from patients. — Staff Reporter

Security beefed up for Karunanidhi's visit

VILLUPURAM: Elaborate security arrangements have been made for Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's visit here on Sunday to launch the second phase of land distribution to landless farmers.

The function will be held at the Tamil Nadu Housing Board ground near Sacred Hearts Higher Secondary School. A total of 2,000 police personnel have been deployed in and around the venue. — Special Correspondent

Sentenced to 5 years RI

CHENNAI: A Special Court for CBI cases in Coimbatore has convicted and sentenced N. Saravana Perumal to five years rigorous imprisonment and ordered him to pay a fine of Rs. 2.66 lakh in connection with charge sheets filed against him for offences including cheating and forgery. The Anti-Corruption Branch, Chennai, registered the case. The allegation was that Perumal, while he was manager of Indian Bank's Palladam branch in Coimbatore district, made false entries of credit by manipulating documents. Subsequently, he withdrew the amount, causing a loss of Rs.58,39,703 to the bank.

The charge sheets were filed for offences under sections 420, 468, 471 and 477 A of IPC and 13 (2) and 13 (1) (d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. He was acquitted of the charges in one charge sheet. — Special Correspondent

Takes charge

CHENNAI: B. Manivannan has taken charge as Zonal Manager (in-charge) of LIC, South Zone, in the place of G. Prabhakara who has been appointed Member (Life) in the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority. — Staff Reporter

Loan for eight women SHGs

CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Saturday handed over cheques for Rs. 3 lakh to eight women self-help groups of BESTNORA, an NGO, as loan, for running catering, crèche and tailoring units, vending vegetables and selling sarees. The loan was sanctioned by Indian Overseas Bank, according to a press release. — Special Correspondent
