KOTTAYAM: The resentment among a section of the autorickshaw drivers against the move by the district administration to streamline the autorickshaw system turned violent on Saturday when some of them allegedly attacked an assistant motor vehicle inspector and mediapersons. Two persons were taken into custody by the police in connection with the incident. The auto drivers resorted to a flash strike following this. Auto drivers in the town were allegedly charging exorbitant rates and the new District Collector Raju Naryana Swamy initiated steps to streamline auto services in the town. As part of the move, the town autos were painted yellow in the front and given separate code number and they were asked to install fare meters. This created resentment among those operating from across the nearby villages and during Saturday's operation, the motor vehicle officer was attacked by some persons. Cameraman of Asianet Cable Vision Anil Adoor, who was canning the scene, was also manhandled. District authorities have warned of stern action against those violating the rules.
