NEW DELHI: To spread public awareness about the need to keep the Delhi Metro clean and protect it from incidents of stone-throwing that have in the past caused much damage to its property and assets, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has started a communication campaign in East Delhi with the help of a series of street corner plays. The campaign has been started with plays in Shahdara, Seelampur, Welcome and Shastri Park and adjoining colonies. Drama groups consisting of eight artistes have been performing plays in Hindi, Punjabi, Haryanavi and Bhojpuri dialects to explain to the public about the penalties associated with stone-throwing and spitting paan inside the Metro premises. At present, stone-throwing on the Metro is a serious offence, punishable with life imprisonment or rigorous imprisonment for 10 years and even death sentence in case metro trains or tracks are damaged or sabotaged. Spitting paan or being drunk on the Metro also invites a fine of Rs. 500 apart from forfeiture of ticket. The plays will be held in other areas subsequently, DMRC said, adding that they had been started in East Delhi as incidents of stone-throwing took place here during the Delhi bandh called by the traders on September 20 this year.
