MYSORE: The city is close to receiving Rs. 1,834 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) with the Mysore City Corporation signing a memorandum of agreement with the Union Ministry of Urban Development on Friday. The agreement is mandatory and is one of the three documents to be exchanged by the local authorities and the State with the Centre if funds are to be sanctioned. With the signing of the agreement, the city is set to implement infrastructure projects in a bid to achieve the objectives envisaged in the City Development Plan (CDP). Corporation Commissioner K.N. Chandrashekar and M. Rajmani, Secretary, Union Ministry of Urban Development, signed the agreement in Delhi on Friday paving the way for release of funds to Mysore. It is estimated that the city will take up infrastructure projects for which Rs. 1,834 crore will be released over the next seven years. The Centre's contribution will be 80 per cent while the State Government has to release 10 per cent and the city corporation will raise the rest. However, the agreement stipulates that the corporation should usher in reforms such as adopting a scientific accounting pattern, a transparent budgetary system, bringing in reforms under the 74th Amendment to the Constitution pertaining to citizens' participation, introduction of e-governance, rational property tax system, and revision of water tariff in the next few years. The CDP for Mysore was approved on October 4 and the local authorities submitted a project report for two major works to the Centre. Funds will be sanctioned when the projects come before a Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC). The two projects approved for Mysore relates to overhauling the drinking water distribution network at an estimated cost of Rs. 194.54 crore and improvement of 20 slums and construction of 2,788 houses for the rehabilitation of slum dwellers at an estimated cost of Rs. 45.62 crore. Funds will be released in four instalments.
