Mamata's suggestion to end impasse
Kolkata
: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Saturday suggested an alternative to end the Singur impasse. She said that around 500 acres of land, acquired ``forcibly'' by the West Bengal Government, should be returned to farmers and the adjacent 450 acres of low land given to the Tatas for their project.
``We hope that the State Government will think it over. The Singur farmers did not voluntarily give around 500 acres and the Government should return it to them,'' Ms. Banerjee, whose hunger strike entered the 13th day, told newsmen.
On Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's assertion on Friday that his Government would not budge an inch from the project, she said: ``He should set aside his ego. If he thinks that we are weak because we are agitating in a peaceful way, he is wrong. If he shows decency, we will show courtesy. But if he adopts a rigid attitude, our hunger strike will continue.''
She said 700 acres available at nearby Dankuni could also be used for the Tata project. PTI
