THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Vice-Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai has stressed the need for enhancing the quality of teachers by providing them with avenues for updating their knowledge. He was delivering a talk on `Education for inclusive growth' at the C. Achutha Menon Centre and Library here on Saturday. Dr. Pillai said the country would have to produce a huge army of teachers in the coming years for achieving the national objectives of universal primary and secondary education. Dr. Pillai said a mechanism should be evolved to ensure the involvement of teachers in content creation of the education programmes. Even though the country possesses Edusat, a satellite exclusively for education, only 10 per cent of its capacity is now being used owing to drawbacks in content generation. Only competent teachers can generate content. Teachers can undertake the task only if they are equipped to handle the information and communication technology (ICT) effectively. Sustained efforts should be on to make teachers ICT-savvy, he said. Educationist Hridaya Kumari, among others, spoke.
