Canoes seized

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Seven canoes used for illegal sand-mining were seized by a team of revenue officials, led by RDO K.V. Mohankumar, following a raid at Vellayani lake area on Saturday.

The canoes were seized from Vavvamoola, Kulangarakkadavu and Bandu kadavu.

Equipment used for mining sand was also seized during the raid. The seized canoes will be shifted to the premises of the village office at Nemom.

Illegal sand-mining is mostly done in areas adjoining the agricultural college at Vellayani.

In many places the lake was found to be 30 ft. deep; the lake was originally only 10 ft. deep.
