Nine years' jail for assault

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Saturday sentenced a man to nine years' rigorous imprisonment for criminally assaulting a minor and intimidating him not to inform about it to anyone in the erstwhile Nangla Machi slum cluster on Ring Road in the Capital two years ago.

ACMM Kamini Lau sentenced Bunty alias Dev Charar to seven years' imprisonment under Section 377 (having carnal intercourse against the order of nature) and two years' imprisonment under Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

The convict would pay a compensation of Rs.10,000 to the victim within two months of the judgment, failing which the said amount would be recovered from his estate by way of attachment, Ms. Lau directed. The sentences would run consecutively, the judgment said. "Cases of sexual abuse of children should not be taken lightly. There is no reason why the instance of sexual assault on a male child should be treated differently from a similar act committed on a female child,'' she said
