Staff Reporter

Police put total value of stolen property at over Rs.1 crore

  • Women gang members travelled in share autos at night and looted factories
  • Police confident of cracking many house break-in incidents

CHENNAI: With the arrest of a gang, said to be involved in house break-ins in many parts of the city and neighbouring districts, the police are confident of unravelling many similar cases soon.

Commissioner of Greater Chennai Police Letika Saran told reporters here on Saturday that following complaints of house break-ins, a special team was formed. It came to light that a 12-member gang, including six women, was indulging in crimes such as stealing valuables from locked houses and commercial establishments over the last one year and more. After stealing two-wheelers, the gang used fake number plates to indulge in chain snatching and waylaying among others. Following the arrest, the police seized the vehicles, new tyres stolen from automobile shops and other valuables.

Inquiries showed that the gang was involved in several crimes in Thiruverkaadu, Kancheepuram, Valasaravakkam, KK Nagar, Tirumullaivoyal, Ashok Nagar, MGR Nagar, Guindy, Poonamallee, Madavaram, Red Hills, Villivakkam, Puzhal camp and Ambattur.

The total value of stolen property may be a little over Rs. 1 crore, the police said.

Explaining the method of operation, Joint Commissioner of Police (North) M. Ravi said that the women gang members travelled in share autos at night and broke open locked factories on the city's outskirts to remove the goods.
