Congress urges Government to convene legislature session

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Opposition Congress on Sunday urged the Government to immediately convene a legislature session to discuss various problems confronting the people.

Addressing a press conference in Bangalore, party spokesperson and MLC V.S. Ugrappa noted that the State was supposed to hold a legislature session for a minimum of 60 days a year as per the provisions of the Karnataka Legislature Business Procedure Act 2005.

But this year, the Government had failed to abide by this norm, he said.

He alleged that the Janata Dal (S)-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition Government was avoiding the legislature session as it was scared to face the Opposition.

Mr. Ugrappa expressed concern that the State had been facing severe drought and about 175 farmers had committed suicide after this coalition Government came to power.

The Opposition was waiting for the convening of the legislature session to hold discussion on these issues, he said.

He also demanded that the elections to the urban local bodies, whose term had ended, should be held at the earliest.
