Probe into lawyer's assault ordered

COIMBATORE: District Collector Neeraj Mittal has ordered a probe by the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) into the alleged assault of a lawyer by a woman constable and other constables near the Gandhipuram Bus Stand here on December 14.

A press release from the district administration said on Sunday that the RDO would conduct the inquiry at 11 a.m. on December 21 at the Revenue Divisional Office in the city. Persons having information about the incident could appear before the RDO and disclose it or give in writing. Secrecy of their identity and the information would be maintained, the release added. — Special Correspondent

13 children rescued from industrial units

SALEM: A team of officials rescued 13 children found employed in various industrial units here recently.

A release said the team led by Labour Inspector K. Dharmalingam and Smile Project Director P.V. Viswanathan raided the hosiery and silver anklet manufacturing units in several parts of the city and found the children employed in them. Four of the rescued children were admitted to the Smile special schools. Steps were taken to admit the rest of the children to government schools. — Staff Reporter

Film producers' appeal to Government

CHENNAI: The Tamil Film Producers' Council has urged the Government to reduce rates charged in cinema halls.

A release issued by the council on Sunday stated that this would benefit economically-weaker sections of society.

The organisation thanked the Government for a slew of concessions provided to the film industry. It requested the Film Chamber to allocate 6,000 sq.ft on the proposed block for producers. — Special Correspondent

Jayalalithaa praises Vaiko's padayatra

CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Sunday commended general secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Vaiko for his proposed padayatra from December 18 to 23 to safeguard the interests of the State in the Mullaperiyar issue.

In a statement here, she expressed the hope that all the details regarding the Mullaperiyar dam issue would reach the people through the programme. — Special Correspondent

Durai Murugan leaves for Delhi

CHENNAI: PWD Minister Durai Murugan left on Sunday for New Delhi to take part in the Mullaperiyar talks with his Kerala counterpart N.K. Premachandran.

Convened by the Union Government, the negotiations will take place on Monday. — Special Correspondent

Violence mars peace committee meeting

DINDIGUL: A peace committee meeting convened by the police and revenue officials at Kondamanaicknepatti near here on Sunday was disrupted when a section of participants turned violent. In a fit of anger, a four-member gang from Kottur Avarampatti hurled stones at an autorickshaw parked near the meeting venue.

The village heads and police intervened and brought the situation under control. — Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 110.06 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 3,829 cusecs and the discharge, 11,947 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

Milk vendor robbed of cash at knifepoint

TIRUNELVELI: The Suththamalli police are looking for a gang, which robbed a milk vendor at knifepoint.

Police said the gang waylaid Masilamani (67) of Old Pettai on Saturday night near Kondanagaram and robbed Rs. 67,000 in cash from him at knifepoint while he was returning home.

Sniffer dogs and fingerprint experts were pressed into service.

Two special teams have been formed to nab the culprits.

Welfare assistance distributed

RAMANATHAPURAM: P.V.M. Trust organised a welfare assistance programme here recently.

P.V.M. Abdul Rasak, president, presided. Several poor persons received assistance like sewing machines, vessels, iron boxes.

Rev. Samu Idhayan, Friends of Police, Rockland Madhuram, Suresh Anthreya and others participated.

Three held for selling lottery tickets

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Sayalkudi police on Saturday arrested three persons for selling lottery tickets.

They also seized tickets worth of Rs.25,000 from Abul kani, Soundara Pandian and Palanivel. — Staff Reporter

ERODE: The Government should extend the water supply to the LBP first

Farmers' convention

ERODE: National convention of the Bharat Kisan Sangh - Farmer's Forum of India would be conducted at Erode during February 16,17 and 18, said the secretary of the Federation of Tamil Nadu Agriculturist Associations C. Nallasamy in a statement on Saturday. He said that the agriculture is started depleting every day due to various reasons. Many farmers were not able to get reasonable price for their commodities and labour shortage also affecting the production. He said it has necessitated the Government to modernise the agriculture. Governor Surjit Singh Barnala would inaugurate the convention, Union Agriculture Minister Sarath Powar, Governor of Madya Pradesh Balram Jakkar and other leading agriculturists would addend the conference.
