Stalin inspects sewage works

THANJAVUR: Underground drainage works in Thanjavur will be completed by March 2007, the Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin, has said.

Talking to presspersons here on Sunday, Mr. Stalin said that in the past problems such as court cases had come in the way of the work. They have been sorted out now and instructions given to expedite the work.

The Government has taken a decision to implement the underground drainage system in all the corporations and municipalities in the State. As of now, the work is going on in 32 municipalities.

No resource crunch

Mr. Stalin said that there was no resource crunch as far as the local bodies are concerned. "All they have to do is to utilise the money and implement the development works," he said.

Mr. Stalin inspected the ongoing works at the sewage treatment plant at Rani Samudram lake. The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD Board) engineers told him that the town was divided into five zones. In the first zone, which has a pumping station at Palliagraharam, laying of pipelines has been completed. In the second zone, which has a pumping station at Karanthai, the third zone, which has a pumping station at the eastern part of Gandhiji Road, and the fourth zone, which has a pumping station at the western part of Gandhiji Road, the laying of pipelines for a few kms is yet to completed.

Ninetysix per cent of the work on the Rs. 70-crore project has been completed, the engineers said. The sewage treatment project can carry 90 litres per capita of sewage a day. Sewage lines will run to a distance of 260 kms. The plant can treat 280.5 lakh litres of sewage a day. The treated water will be used for irrigation.

The Union Minister of State for Finance, S.S. Palani Manickam, the Minister for Cooperation, Ko.Si. Mani, the Minister for Commercial Taxes, S.N.M. Ubayathullah, the Collector, C.Vijayaraj Kumar, and the Managing Director of TWAD Board, Swaran Singh, accompanied Mr. Stalin.
