Naxals kill farmer

KHAMMAM: A tribal farmer, Eesam Narayana, 25, was killed by naxalites in Nagaram village of Gundala mandal on Saturday night. The police said four armed naxalites stormed into the house, dragged Narayana away and shot him dead in the presence of his wife and three children.

The naxaliteswere suspected to be members of the CPI(ML Janashakti). The villagers were kept away at gunpoint when they killed the farmer. — Staff Reporter

Chief Whip's charge

HYDERABAD: Government Chief Whip N. Kiran Kumar Reddy charged that the Leader of Opposition, N. Chandrababu Naidu had lied on the floor of the Assembly that the Heritage Foods Private Limited, owned by his family had not purchased assigned lands. Producing documents at a press conference here on Sunday, Mr. Reddy alleged that the firm had purchased 6.28-acres in Gundusettipalli in Chittoor district. A 1.19-acre Inam land belonging to the Chowdeswari temple in Gundesettipalli was purchased by the company, he added.— Special Correspondent

DGP justifies arrest

VIJAYAWADA: Director General of Police Swaranjit Sen on Sunday said there was nothing wrong in the police preventing the memorial meetings of Maoists.

The DGP's statement came in the wake of arrest of Revolutionary Writers Association leader Chalasani Prasada Rao when the latter tried to attend a memorial meeting of Gowtham in Kodur mandal on Friday. — Staff Reporter

Bandh call in varsities

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association has called for a bandh in universities in the State on December 22 in support of its demand for increased mess charges for BC, SC and ST students in tune with the rising prices. R.Krishnaiah, president, said in a statement on Sunday that the monthly mess bill of each student was Rs. 900-1,100, whereas the Government was sanctioning only Rs. 525. So, students were staying in hostels for 15 days. He wanted the mess charges to be raised to Rs.1,000.

SP lauds police hockey players

KADAPA: Five policemen of Kadapa district were among the Andhra Pradesh Police hockey team, which entered the quarterfinals of the National Police Hockey Championships held in Kolkata from December 4 to 11. Kadapa SP Y. Nagi Reddy complimented - M.S.V. Bhaskar, P. Gangadhar, K. Lakshminarayana, A. Sanjeeva Kumar and Ch. Deepak Devanand, who represented the State police hockey team. — Staff Reporter
