TIRUCHI: Come December, the city gears up for Christmas. Celebrations have already begun in various localities and groups of people carrying musical instruments are seen singing carols and visiting houses.

`The Carollers' is one such group of men who have been singing since 1942.

The members played the organ, violin, guitar and mandolin while singing pop songs and wartime favourites besides carols during the World War.

It was in 1964 that they conducted the first open air carol service called `Carols by candlelight.'

Through the years, they have shaped themselves into holding carol services during Christmas along with choirs from other churches.

The Carollers organised their 43rd `Carols by candlelight' on Saturday at the Campion School grounds.

The highlight of the service was during the offertory.

As the audience joined the choir on stage holding lighted candles, the atmosphere turned sublime.

Mellow stanzas of `Silent night' rented the starless sky heralding the arrival of the festive season.

Prayers were held and choirs representing various churches, including All Saints Church, Emmanuel Church, St. Andrews Church and Holy Trinity Church, participated. The minstrels rendered a couple of carols to the accompaniment of music.

A choir from Joseph Eye Hospital also participated.

A group of kids comprising the choir from Santa Maria School dressed in magenta robes was conspicuous by its presence.

Pastor, Holy Trinity Church, Rev. D. Daniel Jeyakumar, conducted the opening prayer and Rev. Fr. Nathan conducted the closing prayer and benediction.
