Shagun wins trap with National record

Arti Singh shoots her way to 10th successive skeet title

NEW DELHI: Shagun Chowdhary shot a National record 65 to win the women's trap title in the National shotgun championship at the Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, on Sunday.

Though there was no competition worth the name, the 23-year-old girl from Rajasthan shot very well with a series of 23, 20 and 22 to better her own National record of 61 that she had shot twice including the World Cup in the US last year.

"I have been working hard to improve the scores with the Italian coach Marcello Dradi. He was here for a week and has helped me fine tune. I am very happy with this score as you can make the finals of World Cups with this. Now, I want to reach the score of 70," said Shagun.

Shagun won back the national title after the losing the gold in the tie-shoot last year at Hyderabad to Seema Tomar.

In women's skeet, Arti Singh had to face a minor challenge from Saniya Sheikh in retaining her title. A good start by Arti and steady shooting thereafter ensured her 10th successive national title.

Anwer leads

Meanwhile, in the men's trap, Anwer Sultan led with a 71 out of 75 following rounds of 24, 23 and 24. Birendeep Sodhi at 68 and Mansher Singh at 67 were some of the other leading scorers.

In skeet, A.D. Peoples led with a 72 out of 75 with a sequence of 25, 24 and 23. Naveen Jindal (71), Amit Sanghi (70) and Gusti Noria (70) were close on the heels of Peoples at the half way stage.

The results:

Women: Trap: 1. Shagun Chowdhary 65; 2. Reena Singh 35; 3. Varsha Tomar 31.

Skeet: 1. Arti Singh 64; 2. Saniya Sheikh 62; 3. Rashmee Rathore 45.
