CHENNAI: An angling competition for fishermen, winners of which were decided on the basis of their catch, was organised here on Sunday as part of the 125th year celebrations of Chennai port. The event saw 30 fishermen in 10 groups from the hamlets on the coastline from Pazhaverkadu to Uthandi sweating it for more three hours near the outer arm of the eastern breakwater of the port.
Sailing event
The Fisheries Minister, K. P. P. Sami, distributed prizes to the winners. Later, the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association conducted a multi-class sailing event. Though the formal inauguration of the 125th year celebrations by the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, is slated for January 17, a few events such as the angling competition and a boat race on December 20 have been lined up bit earlier. The celebrations will be conducted through the year.
Boating race
Briefing mediapersons, the Chennai Port Trust Chairman, K. Suresh, said Union Ministers Sharad Pawar and T. R. Baalu would be witnessing the upcoming boat race on Wednesday. Applications have been received from 53 villages for the boat race. Apart from conducting competitions for different categories for boats, competitions would also be organised for women.
