Prisoner's mother seeks judicial probe into jail clashes

MADURAI: The mother of a suspected Muslim fundamentalist lodged in Madurai Central Prison has moved the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court seeking a judicial probe into the recent clashes inside the jail. Admitting the habeas corpus petition filed by her, a Division Bench comprising Justice D. Murugesan and Justice P. Murgesen on Thursday ordered notice to the Home Secretary, the Deputy Inspector-General of Prisons and the Prison Superintendent.

The petitioner, M. Nabeeza Beevi (50), said her son, Mohammed Ali alias Pandu Ali along with a few other inmates was assaulted by a murder convict, with the help of a couple of jailors last month. She sought to constitute a committee headed by two judicial officers to enquire into alleged prison excesses.
