This Day That Age
The US President, Mr. Eisenhower, on December 17 took Prime Minister Nehru round his Gettysburg farm in Gettysburg after a three-hour conference on world affairs. The two leaders broke off their secret deliberations to inspect the Angus cattle and to talk about the crops. The Prime Minister apparently enjoyed the tour, and by the time it ended, he gave way to the photographers' insistent demand to "pat the bull on the head." The bull did not object, but the President warned the crowd of jostling reporters and photographers, "be careful - if the bull gets tired, he will turn on you, not on us." Mr. Nehru and the President, guarded by secret service agents, were driven around the 500-acre farm in a survey - a jeep-like vehicle with a blue waterproof canopy. They also tramped through the mud, inspecting the cattle herd and the barns and sheds. At one point, the President and Mr. Nehru drove a half mile from the farm to look at a statue of General Robert E. Lee, Commander of the Southern forces in the war between the States during 1861-65. The President also gave Mr. Nehru an account of some of the decisive battles which later led to the defeat of the Southern forces by the Northern armies in the Civil War. Mr. Eisenhower is expected to offer a major new economic aid programme to India as a result of his talks with Mr. Nehru.
