KOZHIKODE: The 150th anniversary of CSI Cathedral, a landmark in Kozhikode city and a majestic symbol of the contributions of Basel Missionaries to development of North Kerala, will be inaugurated by Mayor M. Bhaskaran on Wednesday. Bishop P.G. Kuruvilla and Paul David Thottathil will attend the function. U.C. Raman, MLA, will be the chief guest. The inauguration of the sesquicentennial celebrations will also mark the commencement of several welfare and development projects. These include a cathedral parish hall project that envisages construction of a hall with capacity to seat 1,000 persons; a new church at Puthiyangadi; setting up a Hermann Gundert Memorial Chair at the University of Calicut; a housing scheme for the poor; construction of cathedral parsonage; mass contact programme and opening a web site portal, Rev Paul David Thottathil, chairman of the sesquicentennial celebrations committee, said on Monday. It was on December 20, 1856 that the CSI Cathedral was opened. It marked an important moment in the history of Basel Mission in North Kerala after Hermann Gundert began activities of the mission in Thalassery on April 12, 1839.
