KOCHI: Under the community water safety programme of the Water and Sanitation Mission, 23,232 samples of water from the 88 grama panchayats in the district will be tested within a year. This was announced at a district-level workshop organised in connection with the water and sanitation programmes held on Saturday at Kakkanad. Ten percent of the samples will be sent for further testing at the district-level laboratories. The workshop was inaugurated by District Panchayat Development Standing Committee chairman Anil Kanjili. The Kerala Water Authority's divisional laboratory at Aluva will function as the State-level referral institute for the scheme. In the first stage, 800 samples will be tested with 50 samples from one ward in each panchayat. The field test kits used at the local-level will analyse the quality of water. The kits will be kept at schools or primary health centres in the grama panchayats. The colour, odour, PH level, salinity, chlorate level and levels of TDS, fluoride and nitrate will be tested using the kits. The programme is being implemented by the State Water and Sanitation Mission chaired by the Chief Secretary. At the district level, the District Level Sanitation Mission, chaired by the district panchayat president, will coordinate the project. At the block level, block panchayats will coordinate the information and human resources for the project. The service of primary health centres, village development offices, kudumbasree units, Kerala Water Authority and schools will be utilised for the project. The work will be reviewed every three months.
