Singur issue

The acquisition of farmlands by the West Bengal Government in Singur to hand over to Tatas for a car factory is deplorable. The argument that it will generate employment is unacceptable as it will deprive the people of their prime farmland. In the name of employment generation, the political class is taking away the traditional employment of people and creating an uncertain future for them. Development should not be at the cost of agriculture.

K.T. Krishnaswami,
Sengundram, T.N.

The West Bengal Government has shown a new way to the country in dealing with acquisition of land for industrial purposes. It has provided sufficient compensation not only to landowners but to sharecroppers too ("Singur: just the facts, please," Dec. 13). It has set a precedent for other governments to follow.

P.R. Prakasa Rao,
Ponnur

The issue is not about compensation; it is about the principle of diverting prime agricultural land for industrial use.

A. Krishnamurthy,
Chennai
