Letters to the Editor
As a rationalist and follower of Periyar E.V. Ramasami, I am thrilled at the Dravida Kazhagam's plan to install 128 Periyar statues across Tamil Nadu. Periyar was a social reformist who should be honoured though he would not have liked the idea had he been alive. I feel statues should be installed in honour of revolutionary poet Subramania Bharati too. I am sure many more names can be added to the list of those who deserve to be honoured. The government should, therefore, identify some land to put up statues. Like the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, it can be made a tourist spot.
Usha Subramanian,
A law should be enacted prohibiting installation of statues we have enough already if the Government is to avoid law and order problems. As for the rationalists, they should contest elections and prove their strength, which they have always shied away from doing.
I hope the Dravidar Kazhagam will reserve at least some space for the proposed statues near places of worship of religious minorities too. Only then, Tamils irrespective of the religion to which they belong can benefit from the rational teachings of the Kazhagam. Otherwise, the DK could be accused of reforming only one section.
R. Sundaram,
