Mansher rallies to beat Anwer

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Mansher Singh came from behind to snatch the gold from Anwer Sultan in the trap final of the 50th National shotgun shooting championship at the Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, here on Monday.

Trailing by four points in fourth place behind Anwer who led with a 115, Mansher shot the best in the `single barrel' final to return a card of 22 out of 25.

That tied him for the gold with Anwer who had shot a 18. It was a good effort from him as he had missed six of the first 12 birds. In the tie-shoot, Mansher shot the first bird while a nervous Anwer, who was not too sure of his ability to compete hard in the `single shot' stage, failed to hit the bird. "It is nice to win the National title once again,'' said the 41-year-old Mansher, who has won it more than a dozen times after his maiden triumph in 1983.

Birendeep Sodhi, who had made the final in the second place with a 113, shot a 19 to take the bronze, two points ahead of Zorawar Singh.

Peoples on target

In skeet, A. D. Peoples, shot a 24 in the final to pip former champion Naveen Jindal by one point. He compiled a National record 142 out of 150.

Peoples had made the final on par with Amit Sanghi, but the latter shot a 22 in the final to take the bronze. Amit had held the National record at 133, and all the six finalists went past that record comfortably.
