Johannesburg: Haroon Lorgat, the convenor of the South African selection panel, is in the line of fire for the decision to give his leading batsmen a break from domestic cricket in the 12-day gap between the fifth ODI and the first Test. Talking to the media here on Monday, he replied, "They did not apply themselves in the Test. That's the only reason." Responding to suggestions that left-arm spinner Nicky Boje's hasty retirement from international cricket was triggered by his comments about the lack of quality spinners in South Africa, Mr. Lorgat said, "If that is the case then it is extremely unfortunate. I was only speaking the truth. I had a long conversation with Boje ahead of his retirement. But could not get through to him since. He was the first choice spinner in the squad. We were only having Paul Adams as an option for the future." Mr. Lorgat revealed paceman Morne Morkel, who excelled against India in the tour game at Potchefstoom, has been named as a cover for the injured Dale Steyn and Andrew Hall, in the squad for the second Test, beginning at Kingsmead, Durban, on Dec. 26.
