Governor behaving like `centre of power': SP

Lucknow: Two days after Uttar Pradesh Governor T. V. Rajeswar accused the IAS officers of the State of not being impartial in the recently-concluded civic bodies elections, the ruling Samajwadi Party on Monday hit back at Raj Bhavan alleging it was behaving like a ``centre of power'' ignoring a duly elected Government.

said here in a statement.

Terming the Governor's remarks as violation of the Constitution, SP State spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary alleged that he had ``transgressed his authority'' and was acting on the instruction of the Congress-led Government at the Centre. "The Governor is a representative of the Centre... He is not answerable to the people", he said and alleged that the UPA Government was ``misusing'' the office of the Governor.

Addressing the IAS officers on the concluding day of the IAS week here on Saturday, Mr. Rajeswar had said that he had received complaints against some of them for not being impartial during the polls.

The Governor had recently flayed a section of the police for what he termed its ``partisan role'' during the civic bodies polls.

His remarks had evoked sharp reaction from Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav who had gone to the extent of advising the Governor not to cross his brief.

Relations between the Chief Minister and Raj Bhawan have come under strain with the ruling Samajwadi Party leaders recently meeting President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and demanding Mr. Rajeswar's recall charging him with ``meddling in governance''. PTI
