Mamata calls 48-hour Statewide bandh

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee has called a 48-hour, Statewide bandh in West Bengal from December 21 in protest against the alleged murder of a 17-year-old girl, whose charred body was found on a paddy field at Bajemalia in the Singur area on Monday.

The victim, Ms. Banerjee claimed, was among those opposed to the Tata car project proposed at Singur. She made the announcement on behalf of the Krishi Jami Bachao Committee on the 15th day of her hunger strike in protest against acquisition of farmland for the project.

The committee comprises organisations opposing the project, its principal constituent being the Trinamool.

Rejecting a CID inquiry ordered by Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Ms. Banerjee demanded a CBI probe into the death of the girl who, she alleged, was "sexually abused and burnt to death."

Meanwhile, a CID team visited the scene and sent the body for post-mortem.
