TN piles up 500

Rajkot: Tami Nadu posted a formidable 500 and declared its first innings before tea, but in the 31 overs it bowled it did not even come close to breaching the defence of the Saurashtra openers in their Ranji Trophy Group `À' Super League contest at the Madhavrao Scindia Stadium here on Monday.

The visitor also suffered a setback when wicketkeeper K. Varun Kumar hurt his left hand and opener M. Vijay had to don the big gloves for more than 10 overs. The Tamil Nadu coach W.V. Raman said "it was a blood clot'' and that Varun should be able to resume on Tuesday.

Saurashtra's opening pair of Kanaiya Vaghela and Sagar Jogiyani showed plenty of pluck while raising 70 runs. After toiling for nearly five sessions, the openers provided some bright moments for their teammates.

Unlucky

Earlier, captain R. Sathish, playing his seventh match for Tamil Nadu in seven seasons (he had played 12 matches for Assam for two seasons), missed a wonderful chance to score his fifth Ranji hundred, and his first for Tamil Nadu. He was seven runs short of that magic mark, but Vaghela, who swung the new ball late, dismissed him after coming in for some punishment. After the fall of S. Sharath for 109, Sathish (93, 139m, 89b, 14x4) was in excellent touch, showing the urgency to accelerate the run-rate. K. Vasudevadas (80, 188m, 140b, 9x4) and R. Naresh (64, 119m, 95b, 6x4, 2x6) then took advantage of a tired Saurashtra attack to post the third century stand of the Tamil Nadu innings.

The two were involved in a rollicking partnership of 114 for the sixth wicket.
