Haryana surprises U.P.

Rohtak: Haryana defeated Ranji champion Uttar Pradesh inside two days, by an innings and 18 runs in the Ranji Trophy Super League match and in the process, picked up a bonus point.

Overnight batsmen Sumit Sharma and S. Rana both completed centuries and Haryana was finally all out for 337, having gained a lead of 266 runs. Sharma made 126 off 234 balls, while Rana smashed two sixes in his knock of 110.

Uttar Pradesh made a disastrous start to its second innings and was reduced to 20 for four. Captain Mohammed Kaif collected a pair — Joginder Sharma bowled him first ball this time. Last man A.W. Zaidi scored 43 off 42 balls with seven fours and two sixes. Paceman Sharma finished with a match haul of 10 wickets, while left-arm seamer S. Budhwar polished off the tail in the second innings to finish with four for 36.

Super League: At Rohtak: Uttar Pradesh 71 and 178 in 51.3 overs (A.W. Zaidi 43, S. Budhwar four for 36) lost to Haryana 337 in 96.4 overs (Sumit Sharma 126, S. Rana 110, R.P. Singh five for 68).

At Rajkot: Tamil Nadu 500 for eight decl. in 145 overs (R. Prasanna 89, S. Sharath 109, R. Sathish 93, K. Vasudeva Das 80, R. Naresh 64, S.P. Jobanputra four for 112) vs. Saurashtra 70 without loss in 31 overs (S.D. Jogiyani 44).
