BANGALORE: Supported by the Government, the Kannada cinema industry and several cultural organisations, the Suchitra Film Society will launch a weeklong international film festival with an exclusive section for students from December 21 in the city. The festival director and acclaimed filmmaker, Girish Kasarvalli, told presspersons here that the success of the festival with the catchphrase "World in Bengalooru" would hopefully create better and permanent infrastructure for future ventures. He urged the Government to allow the organisers to use Gurunanak Bhavan as a permanent centre for their activities on the lines of Kerala's Kairali cultural centres. Emphasising the need to draw the attention of students to good cinema as a cultural idiom, Mr. Kasarvalli said that the response from students had been encouraging. The organisers hoped to get such a response from other parts of the State, he said. Chief Minster H.D. Kumaraswamy would inaugurate the festival at Chowdiah Memorial Hall on December 21. Noted filmmaker and MP Shyam Benegal would be the chief guest. Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa would inaugurate the Kannada films retrospective at Tribhuvan cinema hall on December 22. The release of "Most Memorable Films of the World" authored by the vice-president of the Federation of Film Societies of India, H.N. Narahari Rao, would mark the occasion. Besides the noted film international makers, veteran Kannada filmmaker M.V. Krishnaswamy, Mohan Agase and Gajendra Ahire (Maharashtra), Manju Borah (Assam), Ahsan Muzid (Arunachal Pradesh), K. Satyanarayana (Andhra Pradesh), Radhakrishnan and Biju (Kerala) and the leading officials of other major international film festival such as Jabbar Patel, Sudheer Nanadgaonkar, Bina Paul and Thngaraj would participate in the event. The interaction sessions would be held on each day at the Green House, adjacent to Tribhuvan and Kailash cinema halls, Mr. Kasaravalli said. The acclaimed Iranian film "Mama's Guest" would be screened at the inaugural session, he said. Entry for all screenings would be only through delegates' season pass. Those interested may contact Suchitra Film Society (ph: 26711785) and Mars Distributors, opposite Kanishka Hotel Gandhinagar, Banaglore (ph: 65755024).
