Farmer ends life in Hassan taluk

HASSAN: A farmer committed suicide by consuming poison following loss of his potato crop.

According to the police, Narase Gowda of Kuppalli village in Hassan taluk took poison on Saturday and was taken to the Government Hospital in Hassan. He died on Monday.

Narase Gowda had cultivated the potato crop by taking a bank loan of Rs. 1 lakh. He had also borrowed Rs. 50,000 from people. Because of the pest attack, Narase Gowda could not get a good yield. Upset over that, he decided to end his life, police said. — Staff Correspondent

WiMax deployment

BANGALORE: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has started deployment of WiMax equipment, Aperto Networks' PacketMax 5000 base stations and subscriber units in Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Pune and four rural areas across Haryana.

The deployment comes in the wake of Aperto's successful bid in response to a BSNL tender issued in late 2004. The process is planned for completion in January 2007.

The WiMax network will enable BSNL to offer enterprise customers a wide range of value-added, high bandwidth data communication services.

Man murdered

BIJAPUR: A man has been arrested on charges of murdering his father at Bagalur village in Sindagi taluk. The accused has been identified as Paramanna Ghattaragi. The victim's name was given as

Revanasiddappa Ghattaragi.

According to the police, the man committed the act after his father advised him not to spend money lavishly.

Revanasiddappa Ghattaragi was cremated in the field and a police complaint was given that he was missing. — Staff Correspondent

Yediyurappa's visit

BANGALORE: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Tuesday will review the arrangements made for the All-India Kannada Sahitya Sammelana in Shimoga.

He will take part in the flag hoisting ceremony organised as part of the Kannada Sahitya Sammelana at Nehru Stadium in Shimoga on Wednesday.

He will participate in the inaugural function of the Sammelana on Thursday. — Special Correspondent

Rasta roko

BIJAPUR: Shopkeepers staged a rasta roko after underground sewage flowed into their shops near the main bus stand area here on Sunday. The shopkeepers complained that the authorities had not taken any steps to clear the underground drainage in the area despite repeated pleas. As a result, sewage started leaking into their stalls especially those located below the ground level. — Staff Correspondent

DHARWAD: Kousali Institute of Management Studies in collaboration with Dr. D.C. Pavate foundation organised a lecture on `Developing leaders for global future' by Dame Sandra Dawson, Master, Sydney Sussex College, Cambridge University, here on Sunday.

Prof. Dawson gave a presentation on management of globalisation, qualities required by leaders and how the business schools can adapt themselves and manage the change in the global era. — Staff Correspondent

Protest

DHARWAD: Thousands of farmers from various villages that fall under the Dharwad Rural Legislative Assembly Constituency led by MLA Vinay Kulkarni laid siege to the office of the Hubli Electricity Supply Company here on Monday and staged `rasta roko' agitation for about five hours. They were protesting against the indiscriminate load shedding by HESCOM .
