Staff Correspondent

Need to protect and preserve monuments of the Adil Shahi era

  • 100 declared monuments are under the supervision of ASI
  • `Manuscripts are getting spoiled due to poor maintenance'

BIJAPUR: President of Bijapur Monument Protection Committee, S.A. Punekar on Monday urged the Union Government to set up a separate Archaeological Survey of India circle here to protect and preserve number of Adil Shahi era monuments.

Addressing a press conference here he said there were nearly 100 declared monuments including Gol Gumbaz under the supervision of ASI in Bijapur but most of them were in dilapidated condition for want of proper care.

Mr. Punekar said the ASI circle with its main office in Dharwad was not in a position to maintain Bijapur monuments. It had become a major problem to pursue the proposal to include monuments such as Gol Gumbaz and Ibrahim Rouza in the list of world heritage sites.

Mr. Punekar, also president of SECAB, a minority association , said the association and All India Persian Teachers Association of New Delhi will jointly organise a three-day seminar on "Art, Architecture and Literature of Adil Shahi Era" here from December 21. Experts from Britain, Japan and other overseas countries besides India were scheduled to take part.

There were innumerable manuscripts of Adila Shahi era in Bijapur, which could be abundant source for researchers.

Majority of manuscripts had been dumped in the museum, and they were getting spoiled due to poor maintenance. These manuscripts had to be handed over to Hampi University for scientific preservation, he said.
