HYDERABAD: Hyderabad batted itself to a position of strength on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group `B' match against Mumbai at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here.

At stumps on Monday, Hyderabad was 253 for five, a lead of 138 runs with five wickets in hand and two days to spare.

Much to the chagrin of the Mumbai camp, the home team batsmen displayed the desired discipline to keep the bowlers at bay. That they even put behind the negative tactics of Mumbai was a tribute to their skills.

Indiscreet shots

The wickets that fell today were more due to indiscreet strokes rather than any menacing bowling. First, captain Anirudh Singh stepped down to loft off-spinner Ramesh Powar over mid-off only to offer a simple catch to point.

Then D.B. Ravi Teja (45, 149b, 5x4), who played some impressive strokes on either side of the wicket, once again threw his wicket away poking at an away-swinger from Waingankar to be caught in the slips.

Southpaw P. Sashank Nag failed to read the wrong one from Powar and was caught in the slips. The Mumbai off-spinner was the only one who made an impression and looked like picking up wickets.

Huge sixes

Arjun Yadav (29, 2x6) looked in good touch smashing Powar and left-arm spinner Nilesh Kulkarni for two huge sixes before he was deceived by an in-swinger from Swapnil Hazare to be trapped leg-before.

At 174 for five, Mumbai had hopes of pulling things back. But the enterprising D. Vinay Kumar (64 batting, 7x4, 1x6) and Ibrahim Khaleel (41 batting) added 79 runs for the unbroken sixth-wicket, which effectively pushed Mumbai back to the wall.
