Special Correspondent
VILLUPURAM: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss has appealed to the Government to take speedy measures to make Tamil official language of the State in the real sense. Addressing partymen at a demonstration staged at the Collectorate here, Dr. Ramadoss noted that even 50 years after legislation was passed making Tamil official language, nothing concrete had been done in this direction. Even though the IAS and the IPS officers hailing from other States had learnt to affix their signatures in Tamil, those who were born and brought up in Tamil Nadu were unwilling to do so. He appealed to Chief Minister Karunanidhi to write to all District Collectors to strictly implement legislation that provided for passing government orders in Tamil. He also urged all trade and commercial establishments to put up name boards in Tamil.
Bifurcation sought
The PMK leader called for bifurcation of Villupuram, Salem and Vellore districts for their overall development. He pointed out that Mr. Karunandhi had agreed in principle to bifurcate the socially, educationally and economically backward Villupuram district. It must be done without delay. He called for establishment of a government university in Villupuram district. Dr Ramadoss urged the Government to fill up three lakh vacancies in government departments through Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. Dr. Ramadoss said he was appreciative of the concern shown by All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi on the ethnic crisis in Sri Lanka. Chennai Special Correspondent writes The PMK on Monday staged demonstrations in different parts of the State to highlight the need for implementation of all provisions of the Official Languages Act, 1956. In Chennai, party president G.K. Mani, along with Member of Parliament A.K. Moorthy and Member of the Legislative Assembly T. Velmurugan, held a demonstration near Valluvar Kottam. Those who took part in the demonstrations in other areas were former Union Minister N.T. Shanmugam at Vellore; Peranamallur MLA G. Idiroli Manian at Tiruvannamalai; MLA Sakthi Kamalambal at Kanhceepuram; MLA K. Arumugam at Chenglpattu and Omalur MLA A. Tamizharasu at Salem. Mr. Mani said it was during the Congress regime in 1956 that the Act was created. The then Finance Minister C. Subramaniam, who piloted the legislation in the Assembly, declared that he had attained salvation. "But, the Act is yet to attain its salvation," Mr Mani said.
