CITU seeks more funds for welfare boards

M. Gunasekaran

To ensure their uninterrupted working

TIRUPUR: The tenth State-level conference of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has urged the State Government to allocate adequate funds and create infrastructure to revive welfare boards for the unorganised sector and ensure their uninterrupted functioning.

A resolution welcomed the State Government move to set up such boards for 12 sectors, announcement of pension and waiving off the fee for registration and renewal.

The conference urged the State to create a provident fund facility for workers in the unorganised sectors on the lines of West Bengal and Tripura. Workers could get the benefits within a month after applying.

Labour laws

Condemning the State for non-implementation of labour laws and the continuing assault on labour rights, the conference urged the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime to rejuvenate the labour department to ensure proper implementation of labour laws in various disputes.

Multinational companies were not coming forward to hold talks with the unions and even in the Government-owned TASMAC, workers had been appointed on a temporary basis. The workers on contract constituted 50 per cent in the public sector and 90 per cent in the private sector.

The CITU said that tripartite committees were yet to be reconstituted even after the regime change. Members for welfare boards were yet to be nominated. It urged the Centre to stop the attempt to amending labour laws.

Cooperative polls

Another resolution urged the State to conduct elections to cooperative bodies in a free and fair manner unlike the recent elections to the Chennai Corporation.

Stating that conduct of agitations such as processions, rallies and demonstrations in a democratic manner was still contained by the authorities, the conference appealed to the Government to provide permission for democratic movements to hold such protests.

Judiciary slammed

Criticising the judiciary for its "pro-management and anti-labour stand" in the recent times, the CITU said the situations should be changed. It called upon the working class to fight vigorously against the anti-labour approach by courts.

On the Mullaiperiyar dam issue, the conference appealed to the Tamil Nadu and Kerala governments to find an amicable solution to raise the water level to 142 ft.
