Vaibhava gets off to a colourful start

Local artistes have been chosen to perform at the event

GULBARGA: A musical extravaganza, "Karnataka Vaibhava," tracing the 2000-year-old history of Karnataka, and the first "Gulbarga Utsav" got off to a colourful start at the Chandrasekar Patil Stadium here on Monday.

Agricultural Marketing Minister Sharanabasappa Darshanapur inaugurated "Karnataka Vaibhava," an eight-day extravaganza, and "Gulbarga Utsav." Senior officials of the Song and Dance Division of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey and zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer P.C. Jaffer were present.

The Song and Dance Division, which is sponsoring the programme, had supported a similar programme in 1982 on the life of Emperor Akbar.

The "Karnataka Vaibhava" programme has been penned by renowned theatre personality H.K. Ranganath.

The songs, which form the main part of the two-and-a-half-hour programme, have been selected from the works of Rashtrakavi Kuvempu, B.M. Shri and D.V.G. Lakshminarayana Punichithayya and others. Famed singers such as K.J. Yesudas, Shimoga Subbanna, Ramakant, Malathi Sharma and Ratnamala Prakash have lent their voice to the tunes of Saralarao.

`Gulbarga Utsav'

"Gulbarga Utsav" will precede "Karnataka Vaibhava" on all the eight days. Leading artistes from various parts of the country will perform.

On the inaugural day renowned light classical singer Kailash Kher and his group kept the audience spellbound with their performance. There will also be a performance by a folk troupe from Maharashtra, qawali by famed Sufi singer Adil Hussaini from Hyderabad, martial art performance by a troupe from Kerala, magic show by Shankar and his troupe "Ghoomar", a dance programme by a troupe from Rajasthan, Diwali dance by a troupe from Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh and folk dance by dancers from Andhra Pradesh. C. Ashwath will render a light classical music programme on the final day of the festival.
