KOZHIKODE: The e-literacy programme launched in the District Jail here in October has received good response from the inmates. The programme added a new dimension to the educative initiatives for the prisoners. Considering the response, jail authorities have requested the District Collector for Internet connection at the Akshaya Centre in the jail. As many as 100 inmates have already been oriented to the basics of the computer through the Akshaya programme. More are coming forward. They have responded with great enthusiasm to the e-literacy initiative, says P.M Anish, Jail Welfare Officer. E-literacy is also bringing about an attitudinal change in them, especially the Marad remand prisoners. The Akshaya Computer Centre was set up in the jail on October 28 with assistance of the Jail Welfare Department, when 100 prisoners registered for the programme in the first phase, says Akshaya Assistant District Project officer C. Baburaj. The expense is to the tune of Rs.120 for the ten-day course. The fund is being provided by the Kozhikode Corporation (Rs.80), and the Civil Station Branch of the State Bank of India which chips in with the remaining sum, says K.V. Sreenath, campaign executive of Akshaya programme here. Mr. Aneesh says the ongoing continuing education programme equip the inmates for the equivalent of standards IV, VII and X.
