KOZHIKODE: The Malabar Chamber of Commerce has appealed to R. Velu, Union Minister of State for Railways, to upgrade the Vellayil railway station as Kozhikode-North in order to ease congestion at the Kozhikode railway station. The Malabar Train Action Committee of Malabar Chamber of Commerce pointed out that the Kozhikode railway station was unable to contain railway passengers during peak hours, as the development of the station was very slow.
Satellite stations
Since the number of railway passengers was going to increase considerably in the coming months, the need for setting up satellite stations of Kozhikode Railway station was being strongly felt. "There should be Kozhikode - South and Kozhikode - North railway stations in addition to the main station," train action committee chairman K.P. Aboobacker and secretary K.P. Aboobacker demanded in their memorandum to Mr. Velu. The memorandum said that during the track-doubling process, Vellayil station was stripped of many of the facilities, including a waiting hall and shelter that existed there. These were not restored.
High revenue
Though only three passenger trains halt at Vellayil station, it fetches a revenue of around Rs.1.25 lakhs a month. Upgrading Vellayil station would be viable since it is situated near Malabar Christian College, and High School. MES Women's College, Vellayil High School, District Industries Centre, Telephone Bhavan, Vydyuthi Bhavan, Coirfed, KDC Bank, Kozhikode Corporation Office and the Government Hospital, near beach, the memorandum said.
