NEW DELHI: To promote use of renewable energy, the Delhi Cabinet on Monday approved a scheme for grant of rebate amounting to Rs. 6,000 on installation of Solar Water Heating System (SWHS) replacing electric geysers at residences. Speaking after the Cabinet meeting that was chaired by her, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said: "It has been decided to provide lump sum incentive or rebate of Rs. 6,000 to each domestic consumer only for installation of the SWHS from the approved and authorised manufacturers or dealers either by way of availing themselves of loan from approved banks or financial institutions of the Government of India or from its own finance." The user of the SWHS would have to pay Rs. 6,000 less on his part and the rebate would be released directly to the manufacturers. The Delhi Transco Limited has been authorised to function as the nodal agency in this case.
Power saver
In Delhi, the move assumes significances since the morning peak demand in winter months is mostly due to heating appliances like geysers, which are heavy guzzlers of electricity. A 100-litre capacity of SWHS can replace an electric geyser for residential use and save 1,500 units of electricity per year. It is expected that at least 200 MW of electricity would be saved from the installation of SWHSs in the domestic sector. There are nearly 18 lakh domestic consumers in the Capital and it is anticipated that 30 to 40 per cent of them may opt for the scheme over a period of six to seven years. The approximate cost of a 100-litre SWHS is Rs.18,000 to 20,000 and of a 200-litre SWHS Rs.26,000 to 38,000.
